Upper and lower blepharoplasty is one of the most effective ways to repair droopy and aging eyelids. It may involve removing excess skin, muscle, and fat. As you age, it is common for the eyelids to stretch and the muscles supporting the eyelids weaken. There are two types of upper blepharoplasty – Double Suture Technique or Incisional. Upper blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia while lower blepharoplasty is done general anesthesia. Blepharoplasty can result in undereye bag reduction, provide long term results, vision improvement, decrease in fine lines, and a younger rejuvenated appearance.
1. Undereye Bag Reduction
Blepharoplasty removes or repositions the excess fat pockets beneath the eyes that create undereye bags. The excess skin holding the fat is trimmed. Because a minimally invasive approach is used, there is little or no scarring. Lower eyelid surgery lessens or eradicates the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
2. Long-Term Results
Eyelid surgery results last a long time. Patients must avoid the sun and maintain a healthy skin care regimen, but the effects can last a decade or more.
3. Vision Improvement
While eyelid surgery is primarily a cosmetic procedure, it can also improve vision. In the most severe cases, health insurance may pay for eyelid surgery to increase a patient’s field of vision. Even those whose vision is only slightly impaired because of drooping eyelids may find they enjoy a better range of vision after surgery.
In addition, many patients report less forehead muscle strain and/or fewer headaches after eyelid surgery. Their eyelids no longer feel heavy and weighed down.
4. Fewer Fine Lines
Eyelid surgery softens fine lines around the eyes. That’s especially true in the area of the lower eyelids and the outer corners. Raising the eyebrows (due to heavy lids) to see more clearly causes deepening of brow furrows and forehead wrinkles. After blepharoplasty, you will no longer feel the need to raise your eyebrows and therefore will avoid making your forehead lines worse.
5. A Younger, Rejuvenated Appearance
The biggest benefit of eyelid surgery is a rested and more youthful appearance. Results look natural, not like you’ve had work done. You look brighter and refreshed. Drooping eyelids can give people an angry or sad look, even if they don’t feel that way. When sagging is corrected and the eye is sculpted, patients look happier and more content. The eyes are literally more open and alert. Seeing a revitalized reflection in the mirror boosts confidence.
